China Reaffirms Stance on Own Next-Gen DVD Standard
October 14, 2005
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the Chinese NDEC (National optic Disc Engineering Center) has recently submitted a program to the working group of the DVD Forum for the development of China's own next-generation DVD format, marking the second time the country has made a move in this direction. The Chinese format somewhat resembles HD DVD, but has a different recording layer measuring only 0.6mm. NDEC also uses another kind of physical layer and it has simplified the video application layer, making the Chinese standard incompatible with the HD DVD format. DVD players using the Chinese format are not expected to hit the market before 2008.
